New Light, New Life

As I write this, we are moving through the Spring Equinox. A time of fresh starts, new life, and a sense of renewed hope for all of our endeavors, our dreams, and our very spirit.

My spirit is soaring today as I celebrate the birth of my new granddaughter. She was born under a full moon this past Friday night and I had the privilege to again attend the miraculous process of birth. To marvel at the courage, strength, and beauty my daughter brought to this experience and to witness the love and joy with which she and her husband ushered in this new life.

I had the honor, at the birthing center, of being able to catch this baby and place her on my daughter at the moment of birth. A gift I will forever treasure.

What a joy as well to watch baby Alexandria welcomed home by her extended family and especially by her brother and sister, with wonder and giggles.

I’m grateful for such an oasis of hope and pure joy following all the trials and tribulations of the pandemic and the grief and sadness we’re experiencing for the Ukrainian people.

Life does have a way of fortifying us with optimism and grace even when we feel overshadowed with darker times.

The Spring Equinox symbolizes the struggle between darkness and light, death and life. Today the darkness and the light will be equal. And as our days grow lighter, hopefully so do our hearts and minds and spirits.

This light doesn’t have to come only in the form of an event as monumental as a new birth. Rebirth can be found in so many areas of our lives—watching our spring bulbs pop out to greet us once again, the sound of morning birds returning to nest with us, fresh air and sunshine filling our living spaces. Perhaps it’s found in a new undertaking or attitude. Or in reconnecting with nature, friends, or even with our “lighter” selves after the long winter months of turning inward.

As Albus Dumbledore reminds us, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.”

I wish you all a Spring filled with moments of renewal and hope and an oasis of light—in whatever form it most shines for you!
